Head for the Hills

So here I am, just sitting here trying to process 39 years of marriage, to the same person!! I’ve been asked what the secret is many times, and truly my best piece of advice would be to simply invest in it. When you do that, I mean REALLY do that, the yield is amazingly rewarding, BUT it’s not always easy, in fact, it’s hard, it requires you to be intentional. You gotta do it on purpose. Life can be overwhelming, kids, infertility, loss, school, sports, church, work, health problems, extended family, aging parents, friends, pets, financial struggles, I think I could go on FOREVER, but amidst the chaos, there’s the two of you, who, at some point, chose each other. Do you remember being head over heels?! Although Benny and I are past some of the craziness that younger families have to deal with, we remember it well, and we still have very hectic day to day obligations, as well as the obstacles that come along later in life. There’s always something, but for 39 years we have somehow managed to go away for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. It’s always a short trip, usually to North Georgia, but it’s something we look forward to all year. I can’t recommend this enough! If you’re reading this, take the lead and start making plans, TODAY. Keep it simple, don’t over complicate it, just grab your honey, and head for the hills. The kiddos are with people you trust, the dog will be fine, and everything you left behind will still be there when you get back. As soon as you hit the highway, it’s on! Stay up late, sleep in, eat your favorite foods, order dessert, hold hands, giggle, take silly pictures, talk about your future, share your crazy ideas, ENJOY EACH OTHER. Now, more than ever, our first thoughts go to finances, we can’t afford it, right? I get it, I remember our first anniversary, and to say we were broke, well, that’s just not enough to accurately describe our situation, at the time, LOL! Nonetheless, we managed to rent a tiny cabin at Cheaha State Park, and I felt like a Disney princess :) The following Friday, when Benny got his paycheck, we started our “anniversary trip” savings envelope for the next year. We really do make the time and the money for the things that matter the most to us. Investing in each other will spill over to the overall vibe in your home, it’s a direct investment in your littles, no matter their ages. Letting everyday life deplete you is not a badge of honor. You, your sweetie, your home, your kids, and your future grandkids are worth the investment. Begin today, let it start with you! If you stopped by and have any words of wisdom, creative weekend getaway suggestions, questions, or comments, I’d love to hear from you :) I love family and home SO much and will always be your biggest fan!
